Uses of activated carbon

Activated carbon is widely used in many fields, including gas purification, water treatment, gold recovery, etc.

Gas Purification

Activated carbon is commonly used for gas purification to remove oil vapors, odors, and other harmful gases from the air. In the most frequent application—the treatment of industrial exhaust gases—activated carbon is embedded within the filtration media.

Water Treatment

Activated carbon is characterized by a highly developed pore structure, an enormous specific surface area, good hardness, excellent stability, and ease of regeneration. It is widely used for water purification in water treatment plants, the beverage industry, thermal power plants, and the nuclear industry.

Gold Recovery

Coconut shell activated carbon features a highly developed pore structure, a large specific surface area, good hardness, excellent adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption kinetics, ease of desorption, and the ability to be regenerated repeatedly. It is primarily used in the Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP), Carbon in Leach(CIL), Carbon in Column(CIC) process for gold extraction.

Applications for Respirators/Protective Masks

Produced using high-quality activated carbon with maximum porosity, this material undergoes a series of processes including chemical catalyst impregnation, high-temperature pyrolysis, drying, and dedusting. It offers exceptional adsorption capacity, rapid chemical catalytic reaction, effective antiviral properties, and high mechanical strength. It is widely used in gas masks, protective face masks, various types of filter canisters and cartridges, antiviral filter elements, and specialized filter panels for ventilation hoods.

Activated carbon for supercapacitor

The positive and negative electrodes of a supercapacitor are primarily composed of activated carbon. They store charge by utilizing the massive specific surface area of the activated carbon to adsorb ions from the electrolyte.

Supercapacitors are characterized by a long charge-discharge cycle life, excellent electrochemical stability, environmental friendliness, and a wide operating temperature range. They are widely used in applications such as electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, power tools, electric toys, railway systems, and power grid systems.

Spirit Purification

Activated carbon filters can be used to remove organic impurities from spirits such as baijiu, vodka, and whiskey—impurities that can otherwise affect the color, taste, and aroma of the liquor. By passing vodka containing such organic impurities through an activated carbon filter at an appropriate flow rate, one can obtain a spirit with the same alcohol content but a significantly higher level of organic purity.

Mercury Adsorption

Activated carbon—typically impregnated with sulfur or iodine—is widely used to adsorb mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants, medical waste incinerators, and natural gas wellheads. This type of activated carbon is a specialized product and, in most cases, cannot be recycled or reused.
