Description

Coconut Shell Activated Carbon for Drinking Water Treatment

Yuncheng coconut shell activated carbon is designed for water purification applications where the reduction of residual chlorine, unwanted tastes and odors, and selected dissolved organic contaminants is required.

Made from high‑quality coconut shell via steam activation, this granular carbon features well‑developed micropores for effective adsorption. Different grades are available to match granular carbon beds and various water filtration systems.

Available particle sizes, iodine values and other technical specifications can be selected according to your water quality, filtration equipment and treatment objectives.

Applications of Coconut Shell Activated Carbon in Drinking Water Treatment

  • Chlorine Reduction: Used in suitable filtration systems to reduce residual chlorine.
  • Taste and Odor Control: Helps improve water taste and reduce unwanted odors.
  • Organic Contaminant Adsorption: May reduce selected dissolved organic compounds, depending on carbon properties and operating conditions.
  • Water Filtration Systems: Available for compatible granular carbon beds and filtration equipment.
  • How to Select the Right Grade?
  • The appropriate activated carbon grade depends on the target contaminants, incoming water quality, particle size, flow rate, empty bed contact time (EBCT), and filter design. For drinking water applications, confirm that the product meets the applicable requirements for its intended use.

Features

Rich in micropores, excellent adsorption for small contaminants
Characterized primarily by micropores, this material is well-suited for removing residual chlorine, disinfection by-products (such as trihalomethanes), compounds that cause musty or earthy odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and trace pesticides—all of which are small-molecule organic substances. It is the preferred filter medium for water purifier cartridges.
High Hardness and Minimal Dusting
The granules are resistant to abrasion and erosion; they do not easily break down or release black particles (fines) even after prolonged exposure to water flow within a filter cartridge. These crushed-granule media—available in sizes such as 8×30 and 12×40—offer stable flow resistance, making them ideal for filling filter housings and cartridges.
High mechanical strength; resistant to abrasion and pulverization
Compared to coal-based carbon, it features lower ash content, with heavy metals and water-soluble substances kept under strict control. Produced via steam activation, it contains no chemical residues.
Improve Taste and Remove Off-Flavors
Effectively eliminates the taste of bleaching powder (chlorine), as well as musty or earthy odors from tap water, resulting in water with a crisp, pleasant taste; widely used in household water purification and bottled water production lines.
Good chemical stability
Stable within the typical pH range for drinking water (5–9), resistant to weak acids and bases, and maintains consistent adsorption performance under standard water purification operating conditions at ambient temperature.
Regenerable
Once saturated, the adsorbent can be regenerated at high temperatures to restore its adsorption capacity, keeping long-term usage costs manageable.
